SUMMARY:Skiing and Navigation Course
DESCRIPTION:Skiing and Navigation; how to get to the right place on snow and on ski.\n\nThis is the second of three 2-day skills courses linked to the Argentière meet. You can pick any or all from: Skiing and Snow Safety\, Skiing and Navigation\, Skiing and Glacier Travel. \n\nAnalysis of Eagle Ski Club tour reports shows that incidents often start with navigational errors. Navigation on snow and travelling on skis has some significant challenges in addition to those facing us in summer hillwalking or mountaineering situations. Interpretation of maps in different formats\, the increased scale of the Alps\, the size of the features\, the speed of travel when skiing down\, the choice of line when skinning and many other factors are all things we have to deal with. \nThis 2 day course has 2 goals:\n1. To ski to the right place using various navigation techniques. There will be an emphasis on the techniques required on snow and on skis. Some previous navigation experience in a British summer environment will be useful but is not essential.\n2. To ski to the right place more easily\, looking and feeling better about it. We will examine fundamental principles of effective ski technique for ski mountaineers as well as looking at coping strategies for challenging snow.
