SUMMARY:Val d'Aosta Day Tours
DESCRIPTION:From a base in Aosta\, the ski touring areas of Courmayeur\, La Thuile\, Crevacol\, Pila\, Grand Saint Bernard and Gressoney are all within an hour’s drive. This week has replaced a trip to Kazakhstan to reduce carbon emissions. Every llttle helps.\n\nThe goals of the week will be very much directed by the Eagles who sign up.\nWe have a massive variety of terrain to go at in terms of altitude\, aspect\, angle\, uplift (or not).\nI’ve skied a great deal in the Valle d’Aosta between Courmayeur and Aosta itself during day visits from Chamonix. I’ve also spent a reasonable amount of time in Gressoney. So I’m looking forward to being based in this fantastic area for a full 6 days of ski touring.

DESCRIPTION:Glacial terrain is much like avalanche terrain in that it’s all fine until it isn’t. And then it can really get quite bad. So\, like avalanche risk management\, we will examine 2 strands: what to do to minimise the risk of bad things happening in the first place by avoiding slots\, bare ice\, moraines and so on. This will involve route planning\, observation in the field and tactical navigation. Then\, if it all gets out of hand and someone goes in a hole\, we will look at rescue\, whether by climbing out or pulling someone out if the easier solutions aren’t feasible. \nWhile we’re skiing around on the glacier\, we’ll also look at being in control at whatever level is appropriate for the group. \nJoin the Eagle Ski Club to attend this course\nClick here for details \n

DESCRIPTION:Analysis of Eagle Ski Club tour reports shows that incidents often start with navigational errors. Navigation on snow and travelling on skis has some significant challenges in addition to those facing us in summer hillwalking or mountaineering situations. Interpretation of maps in different formats\, the increased scale of the Alps\, the size of the features\, the speed of travel when skiing down\, the choice of line when skinning and many other factors are all things we have to deal with. \nThis 2 day course has 2 goals:\n1. To ski to the right place using various navigation techniques. There will be an emphasis on the techniques required on snow and on skis. Some previous navigation experience in a British summer environment will be useful but is not essential.\n2. To ski to the right place more easily\, looking and feeling better about it. We will examine fundamental principles of effective ski technique for ski mountaineers as well as looking at coping strategies for challenging snow. \nJoin the Eagle Ski Club to attend this course\nMore details here

DESCRIPTION:This is the first of three 2-day skills courses linked to the Argentière meet. You can pick any or all from: Skiing and Snow Safety\, Skiing and Navigation\, Skiing and Glacier Travel. \nThe aim is to increase competence in three distinct technical areas\, specifically selected as relevant to Eagles by the new mentoring scheme. We will concentrate on improving these skills in a practical ski environment. In tandem with each course\, Andy P will deliver off piste coaching to the group as we move around the mountain. \nEagles will be able to select any or all of the 3 modules\, which will run in parallel with the meet based in Argentière. \n“If you could deliver a course entitled How To Find The Best Snow\, it would be a total winner” – Eagle Ski Club leader talking to Andy P in October 2016. \nThe aim of this course is twofold:\n1. To examine where the best snow will be\, and whether we can ski it without getting ourselves killed\n2. While skiing all this fantastic snow\, how we can get more fun units per turn by feeling more comfortable and confident with our ski technique.
