SUMMARY:Senja Ski Touring
DESCRIPTION:Senja is less well known than the honeypots of Lyngen and Lofoten but provides equally good potential for ski touring. Accessible with a 2 hour drive from Tromsø\, the scenery is spectacular and the landscape could have been made for ski touring with ascents up to just under 1000m and on a variety of aspects. The weather is varied\, as one would expect in an Arctic maritime environment. Often weather and snow conditions can be radically different in adjacent fjords/valleys and so a flexible approach is the key. \n

DESCRIPTION:Skiing and Glacier Travel; crevasse avoidance and what to do if someone falls in.\n\nThis is the third of three 2-day skills courses linked to the Argentière meet. You can pick any or all from: Skiing and Snow Safety\, \nGlacial terrain is much like avalanche terrain in that it’s all fine until it isn’t. And then it can really get quite bad. So\, like avalanche risk management\, we will examine 2 strands: what to do to minimise the risk of bad things happening in the first place by avoiding slots\, bare ice\, moraines and so on. This will involve route planning\, observation in the field and tactical navigation. Then\, if it all gets out of hand and someone goes in a hole\, we will look at rescue\, whether by climbing out or pulling someone out if the easier solutions aren’t feasible. \nWhile we’re skiing around on the glacier\, we’ll also look at being in control at whatever level is appropriate for the group. \nI am passionate about ski technique and passing it on to the people I ski with. DESCRIPTION:Skiing and Navigation; how to get to the right place on snow and on ski.\n\nThis is the second of three 2-day skills courses linked to the Argentière meet. You can pick any or all from: Skiing and Snow Safety\, Skiing and Navigation\, Skiing and Glacier Travel. \n\nAnalysis of Eagle Ski Club tour reports shows that incidents often start with navigational errors. Navigation on snow and travelling on skis has some significant challenges in addition to those facing us in summer hillwalking or mountaineering situations. Interpretation of maps in different formats\, the increased scale of the Alps\, the size of the features\, the speed of travel when skiing down\, the choice of line when skinning and many other factors are all things we have to deal with. \nThis 2 day course has 2 goals:\n1. To ski to the right place using various navigation techniques. There will be an emphasis on the techniques required on snow and on skis. Some previous navigation experience in a British summer environment will be useful but is not essential.\n2. To ski to the right place more easily\, looking and feeling better about it. We will examine fundamental principles of effective ski technique for ski mountaineers as well as looking at coping strategies for challenging snow.

Every llttle helps.\n\nThe goals of the week will be very much directed by the Eagles who sign up.\nWe have a massive variety of terrain to go at in terms of altitude\, aspect\, angle\, uplift (or not).\nI’ve skied a great deal in the Valle d’Aosta between Courmayeur and Aosta itself during day visits from Chamonix. I’ve also spent a reasonable amount of time in Gressoney. So I’m looking forward to being based in this fantastic area for a full 6 days of ski touring.
