DESCRIPTION:Looking to further improve your off piste skiing technique? The Off Piste Improvers course is all about mileage and making the most of the conditions\, whether it is fluffy powder or more challenging snow. \nYou can expect the instruction to be flexible\, dealing with what comes up either in the snow\, or with your skiing. We’ll pull over onto to easier snow where needed to work on skills and to dial in those techniques. Overall\, the aim of the week is to improve and refine your off piste skiing technique by covering as much ground as possible. \nYou will ski with a BASI Ski Instructor for four days\, who will teach you these skills. On Wednesday and Thursday\, you will ski with an IFMGA-qualified Mountain Guide\, which means you will be able to ski the famous Vallée Blanche (subject to weather and conditions\, and your skiing ability)\, as well as other classic itineraries in the Mont Blanc Massif. \nChamonix is the crucible of extreme skiing\, but you don’t have to be an expert to enjoy the many off piste runs throughout the valley. There is amazing variety; with the backdrop of the high mountains ensuring it remains a world-class choice for off piste skiers.

SUMMARY:Skiing and Glacier Travel
DESCRIPTION:THIS COURSE IS FULL \nThere are two principal aims of this course: \n\nTo ski glacial terrain in such a way as to avoid going into a slot and what to do if you or one of your buddies does so. \nGlacial snow can be some of the best in the world. It can also be extremely challenging. You might as well ski it well. While we’re skiing around\, we will also examine both the fundamentals of effective ski technique and some coping strategies when it’s all getting a bit out of hand. \n\nGlacial terrain is much like avalanche terrain in that it’s all fine until it isn’t. And then it can really get quite bad. So\, like avalanche risk management\, we will examine 2 strands: what to do to minimise the risk of bad things happening in the first place by avoiding slots\, bare ice\, moraines and so on. This will involve route planning\, observation in the field and tactical navigation. Then\, if it all gets out of hand and someone goes in a hole\, we will look at rescue\, whether by climbing out or pulling someone out if the easier solutions aren’t feasible.  \n  \nWhile we’re skiing around on the glacier\, we’ll also look at being in control at whatever level is appropriate for the group.  \n  \nI am passionate about ski technique and passing it on to the people I ski with. Here is some typical feedback:  \n“ I learnt more in one day on & off piste at Argentiere with Andy P than all my previous lessons. What a great teacher.” \nI find the best approach is to first observe each student and determine which area of their skiing to focus on to reap the best reward. The challenge is to find a mix of inputs for the different members of the group\, their different skiing styles and learning methods.

DESCRIPTION:A 2-day skills course with the aims of  skiing the best snow without getting ourselves avalanched and have more fun by feeling more comfortable and confident with our ski technique. \n“If you could deliver a course entitled How To Find The Best Snow\, it would be a total winner” – Eagle Ski Club leader talking to Andy P in October 2016.  \nThe aim of this course is twofold: \n\nTo examine where the best snow will be\, and whether we can ski it without getting ourselves killed\nWhile skiing all this fantastic snow\, how we can get more fun units per turn by feeling more comfortable and confident with our ski technique. \n\nThe skill of finding good snow may often seem like the black art of the white stuff. Yes – it takes years of experience and/or intimate knowledge of your back garden resort to be able to know intuitively where the best snow will be on any given day\, but nevertheless there are certain principles to help us hedge our bets. We will examine these principles alongside those of avalanche risk assessment and decision making to avoid the charge of the white rhino. \nIn the same way that refreshing one’s first aid knowledge every 3 years is a useful exercise\, regular top ups in avalanche awareness\, terrain and group management\, and of course rescue scenarios are highly advisable for those of us venturing into ski touring terrain.  \nWe will be using Chamonix’s uplift followed by short skinning sessions to access as wide a variety of snow as possible.
