Skiing and Navigation Course
February 1 - February 2
The aim is to increase competence in three distinct technical areas, specifically selected as relevant to Eagles by the new mentoring scheme. We will concentrate on improving these skills in a practical ski environment. In tandem with each course, Andy P will deliver off piste coaching to the group as we move around the mountain.
Eagles will be able to select any or all of the 3 modules, which will run in parallel with the meet based in Argentière.
Analysis of Eagle Ski Club tour reports shows that incidents often start with navigational errors. Navigation on snow and travelling on skis has some significant challenges in addition to those facing us in summer hillwalking or mountaineering situations. Interpretation of maps in different formats, the increased scale of the Alps, the size of the features, the speed of travel when skiing down, the choice of line when skinning and many other factors are all things we have to deal with.
This 2 day course has 2 goals:
1. To ski to the right place using various navigation techniques. There will be an emphasis on the techniques required on snow and on skis. Some previous navigation experience in a British summer environment will be useful but is not essential.
2. To ski to the right place more easily, looking and feeling better about it. We will examine fundamental principles of effective ski technique for ski mountaineers as well as looking at coping strategies for challenging snow.
