Travel through the mountains on skis – a magical experience.
However you approach it, the rewards are plentiful – skiing above the clouds in a remote environment, the fresh tracks leading from the top of the mountain, and the welcome beer after a full day in the mountains. The great thing is that the stages fit together nicely, so that starting from a solid off piste background, you can progress via either ski safaris or from day touring through to “star tours” (a series of day tours from a high mountain base) through to hut to hut touring, epitomised by the famous Chamonix Zermatt Haute Route.
Day touring and safaris are possible throughout the winter from Christmas through to when the lifts close. Hut to hut touring is generally from mid March to mid May, though some huts are open throughout the winter, and Mont Blanc can be skied well into June.
Generally I travel on skis with up to 6 people, and run itineraries both independently and through the Ski Club of Great Britain and the Eagle Ski Club. They will help you to find like minded people with whom to share the experience.
