Stubai St Anton Ski Safari – Photo Gallery

A special journey between 2 major Austrian resorts

  • Safari is Swahili for journey. On skis, we can make a journey, in this case from two prime resorts but avoiding the crowds of both by dropping off the backs
  • By moving from one valley to the next, we can access untouched snow that for resort skiers would be logistically complex.
  • We move in a wild mountain environment. Here are the boys in a glacial tunnel. Sadly, this has now gone, a casualty of climate change.
  • Mountain skills may also be employed. Here's Jane roping into the glacier at the back of the Stubai resort.
  • Halfway through the journey, we spend some time in PItztal, a little known resort for Brits.
  • We often descend into some wild places with unusual local fauna....
  • To complete the full itinerary, we pass through some glacier covered terrain, and this needs good weather and stable conditions.
  • Transport on safari is varied: bus, uplift, skins and here, on foot with Ursula and David
  • Skinning at 3000m behind the Wildspitz, Tirol's highest summit
  • Accommodation is a mix of hotels and mountain huts. To dispel the notion that huts are uncomfortable, here is afternoon tea and strudel at one of my favourites, the Amberger.
